Credit cards, you owe $50 at most

Federal law caps it at $50, and most card companies make it zero.

Debit cards, speed decides the cap

Within 2 days limits the loss to $50, within 60 days to $500, after that there is no cap. That is Regulation E — quote it if you meet resistance, or file with the CFPB.

Ask the card company to reverse the charge. Billing disputes on a credit card run under Regulation Z.

1Call the number on the card. Say “dispute, card not present.” Card not to hand: your provider's fraud line.

2Ask for a freeze and reissue. New card, new number, no charge for either.

3Report it once. ReportFraud.ftc.gov, two minutes.
